Assessment/Mentoring Definitions

ASSESSMENTS

These definitions are intended to clarify the different types of assessments that can be performed to provide feedback to a referee and further their personal growth and development as a referee.

Upgrade Assessment

  • This is an assessment that the referee formally requests from the DDA or SDA.
  • The official must honor the assignments as given by the game referee assignor.
  • The DDA or SDA will assign an appropriate assessor to perform the assessment.
  • The assessor is to be paid in accordance with the fee schedule outlined in OSSRC Policy 4.0, typically by the official requesting the upgrade assessment.
  • The assessor must determine if the match is sufficiently competitive (for the particular referee grade level) in order to be viable toward the upgrade.
  • If the match is determined to be non-competitive by the assessor, it can not be used for upgrade purposes, but the assessor is still responsible for giving feedback to the official and submitting a full written report on ossrc.com
  • If the match is considered to be competitive, then the official’s performance must be determined to be either acceptable or not acceptable.
  • Successful completion of this assessment is one of the requirements for applying for an upgrade in referee grade.
  • An unacceptable performance requires that the referee successfully complete one upgrade assessment to offset this assessment, in addition to whatever the total number of assessments that are required for the upgrade.
  • All assessments required for an upgrade must be performed within 12 months of the first competitive match assessment. Any successful assessments that occur outside this 12-month time frame can no longer be considered as satisfying the requirements of upgrade.
  • The match must be a two 45 minutes halves game.

Maintenance Assessment

  • This is an assessment that the referee formally requests from the DDA or SDA. The DDA and/or SDA can authorize exceptions to this requirement.
  • The DDA or SDA will assign an appropriate assessor to perform the assessment.
  • The assessor is to be paid in accordance with the fee schedule outlined in OSSRC Policy 4.0, typically by the official requesting the maintenance assessment.
  • The assessor must determine if the match is sufficiently competitive (for the particular referee grade level) in order to be viable toward the maintenance.
  • If the match is determined to be non-competitive by the assessor, it can not be used for maintenance purposes, but the assessor is still responsible for giving feedback to the official and submitting a full written report on ossrc.com.
  • If the match is considered to be competitive, then the official’s performance must be determined to be either acceptable or not acceptable.
  • Successful completion of this assessment is one of the requirements for the referee to retain their referee grade.
  • An unacceptable performance requires that the referee must successfully complete an additional assessment to maintain their grade (i.e., 1 for 1).
  • The match must be two 45 minutes halves.

Not Requested Assessment

  • The assessor may or may not be assigned this assessment by the DDA or SDA.
  • The assessor may or may not be paid for performing this assessment.
  • When the assessor is due compensation for this assessment, it is typically not paid by the referee being assessed.
  • This assessment can not be used by the referee for upgrade or maintenance assessment purposes.
  • This type of assessment is performed and graded like an upgrade or maintenance assessment.
  • The assessor is responsible for giving feedback to the official and submitting a full written report on ossrc.com

MENTORING / COACHING

OSSRC Mentoring Program

  • The OSSRC mentoring program is typically not assigned by the DDA or SDA.
  • It is for first, second and third year officials.
  • The mentor is typically not paid by the officials.
  • The mentor is responsible for giving feedback to the officials and submitting a written report on ossrc.com.

OSSRC: Coaching Referees: tournament games

  • The program is typically for helping officials in tournament games.
  • The coaches are typically paid by the tournaments.

Observations

  • An observation may be requested by the DRA, SRA, DDA, or SDA.
  • Observers need not be registered assessors.
  • The observer may be paid by the OSSRC.
  • Observations are unannounced evaluations of a match official and/or a match assessor to appraise their overall performance.
  • No immediate feedback will be provided to the official or assessor being evaluated.
  • An informal confidential report (verbal or written) will be provided to the DRA, SRA, DDA, or SDA requesting the observation, within seven days of the game.
  • The DRA, SRA, DDA or SDA in receipt of this report may only share this information with other members of the OSSRC, and/or may also choose (or not) to provide feedback to the observed official or assessor.
