LAW 9 - THE BALL IN & OUT OF PLAY

LAW 9 HOME PAGE

MORE INFORMATION

The whole of the lines belong to the areas of which they are boundaries.  This includes:

  • goal lines
  • touch lines
  • goal area lines
  • penalty area lines
  • corner arcs

A ball may cross a boundary line on the ground or in the air.

A ball is not out of play if any part of the ball is on or above any part of the line.

Assistant Referee (AR) Positioning:
It is important for an AR to be positioned properly to see the action in the middle of the field and along the touchline

The proper position is approximately 1 yard off the touch line.  This allows the AR to see along the touch line for in-and out-of-play decisions and to have a wide vision of the field at the same time

The AR should also become familiar and comfortable with the side-step mechanic

The side-step mechanic is a shuffle-like move that allows the AR to stay with the second-to-last defender and see touch line events at the same time

This mechanic is much preferred over the crossover step which can easily cause the AR to trip
