General Mechanics - During Play
Assistant Referee
- In line with second to last defender or the ball, whichever is
closer to the goal line
- Flag held straight down and always visible to the referee
- Side-to-side movement, square to the field, unless speed is
needed
- Before signaling, stops, faces field and makes eye contact with
referee

Injuries
Assistant Referee
- Closest to injury, assists with determination of seriousness
- Closest to injury, provides information to referee regarding
related player actions (cause of injury, fouls, misconduct,
retaliation, etc.)
- Closest to team areas, prevents entry into the field of persons
not beckoned by referee and calms others remaining off the field

Signals - Below are the accepted signals for the
assistant referee. The assistant referee should not use unaccepted
signals but should act upon the referee's pregame instructions

Flag Mechanics
- Flag to field size, always in referee's view
- Switch hands when flag is low, not overhead
- Flag motionless while running
- When signaling, stop, face the field, stand erect and make eye
contact with referee
- Lower flag as soon as referee acknowledges it
- Flags are straight

- flag is extension of your arm
- No cross body signals
- Flag is controlled up, lazy coming down
